The electrical components of hoists used in hazardous
locations must meet the requirements of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Control
equipment must conform to standards established by the National Electrical Manufacturers
Association (NEMA). Motors are certified directly by the Underwriters Laboratories
(UL) inspectors. All such codes and authorities apply only to electrical equipment.
There is no national code covering explosion proofing (spark proofing) of
mechanical components. The responsibility for determining the existence and severity
of the hazard in a specific area rests with the authority responsible for enforcing the
code. Careful analysis of all conditions is necessary in order to establish the applicable
Class, Group and Division.
